Content Filtering
Content filtering is applied to users’ e-mails and web traffic. The goal of e-mail filtering is to prevent spam and malicious e-mails containing viruses. The goal of web access filtering is to prevent user access to harmful sites. The web and e-mail environments are the primary breeding grounds for harmful and malicious codes, and they should be protected accordingly.
Content filtering solutions use various methods to inspect the nature of a given site a user is trying to reach. Such a solution checks the environment for the presence of malicious codes, checks whether a particular file the user is trying to download has any viruses, and evaluates the appropriateness of the site for the general policies of the company or institution. It later permits or blocks access according to its findings.
The main success criteria for these solutions can be summarized as follows:
- how much do they slow down access while they are running
- how many operations can they perform simultaneously
- ratio of false positives to false negatives
- ease of use
- ability to self-update against new threats and viruses
- ability to find alternatives in the event of a problem during content filtering
