FireWall
The firewall is an integral part of network security. A firewall follows predefined rules to control traffic flow between networks. Its most common usage is to protect the internal network system from dangers originating on the Internet. The methodology used by a firewall can be summarized as follows: it analyses incoming traffic, compares it to predefined rules, and according to the result either blocks the traffic, allows the traffic or determines another suitable course of action.
Firewalls can be either hardware or software based systems. Hardware based firewalls operate using special hardware supplied by the producers. Software systems can operate on any hardware system that meets the requirements determined by their manufacturers.
The basic capabilities of these products include access control, authentication and NAT. Today’s firewalls, in addition to these capabilities, also have other skills such as VPN, IPS, URL Filtering, Web Security, Antivirus, Anti-Spam, Anti-Malware, Clustering and VOIP. Since these capabilities are well beyond those of a standard firewall, these advanced solutions are also referred to as Security Gateways.
