HSM (Hardware Security Module)
HSMs are devices designed to improve the security of encrypting operations. These devices may be in form of PCMCIA or PCI Express cards, or network appliances. They can be used to protect extremely sensitive information such as a "private key". Cryptographic operations are performed by the HSM and the private key never leaves the hardware, enabling secure applications and processes.
HSM's are also used in applications such as data base encryption, document signing, online banking, EFT transactions and root key protection. These devices can issue thousands of e-signatures per second, and therefore they are valued both for their performance and for security in creating e-invoices and e-documents. These devices are preferred for PCI DSS and SOX compliance
