IDS/IPS (Intrusion Detection System / Intrusion Prevention System)
Intrusion Detection systems detect behaviors presenting potential threats to the privacy, integrity or accessibility of the protected system. Host-based Intrusion Detection systems analyze sources such as system logs in the protected system. They can log potential threats and send warning emails to the concerned parties. Intrusion Detection systems are passive systems. They detect potential threats, but do not take any action against them.
A more advanced version of an Intrusion Detection system is the Intrusion Prevention system. These systems, in addition to detection of possible threats, can also take action towards blocking traffic to prevent danger. These systems operate completely unseen within the network, analyzing approaching packages to evaluate danger and take action if necessary.
